When your tooth has become weakened due to decay, a crack or an existing filling is very large and deteriorated, a dental crown may be necessary. The crown is a cap that sits over the existing tooth to restore its strength, shape, and colour.
Signs That You Need A Crown:
- A cracked tooth without any symptoms
- Your teeth are very sensitive to biting pressure and temperature, including hot and cold
- If your teeth have deep decay there may not be enough natural teeth to hold and support a filling. This is when an onlay/crown may be necessary. We will discuss this with you at the appointment.
- There is a large filling in the tooth that is breaking down
- To improve the shape, colour or symmetry of your teeth
- Potentially following a root canal procedure

Crowns can be made in a number of different materials, such as gold, non-precious metal, porcelain and metal or full porcelain. At Droitwich Dental Studio, we predominantly use porcelain-based crowns which match the colour and shade of the teeth and give the tooth additional strength.
